MLE School 2022 – The Summer School for Machine Learning in Engineering

On September, 13th and 14th, 2022 the first Summer School for Machine Learning in Engineering took place on the campus of the Hamburg University of Technology (TUHH).

The school was organized by the Machine Learning in Engineering (MLE) research initiative of TUHH in collaboration with the Helmholtz Center Hereon, the Deutsches Elektronen-Synchrotron DESY, DASHH, CDCS, ARIC, ahoi.digital, the Career Center of TUHH and the AI.Startup.Hub. With over 100 participating master students, PhD students and postdocs, the school met with an extremely positive response and was a complete success. The participants, mostly from the greater Hamburg area but also from all over Germany, were enthusiastic about the offer and the organization.

The two days offered participants a diverse program with insights into the world of machine learning (ML). The program was fully organized by members of the MLE Research Initiative. The two keynote talks provided insights into the world of AI startups and the highly topical issue of Federated Learning, respectively. Three parallel tracks in the rest of the program allowed participants to choose contributions adapted to their interest and ML experience. In addition to lectures on the fundamentals of machine learning, concrete application examples were presented and ML could be tried out for oneself in hands-on program points. The use cases ranged from electrical engineering to materials science to applications in particle accelerators. In two poster sessions and an elevator pitch event, participants presented their own work on machine learning topics. The three best posters and pitches were selected by a jury and awarded prizes.

The School was rounded off with various events that promoted networking. During the breaks, people exchanged ideas over coffee and snacks. On the first evening, an external social event took place at the Wildwuchs Brauwerk in Wilhelmsburg. The school was concluded on the second day with a networking event. Here, 15 partners and sponsors from the business world presented themselves to the participants and were available for exchange over food and drinks. From startups to medium-sized businesses to large corporations, a diverse selection was represented and there was a lot of networking. The participating partners were Airbus, d-fine, Dealcode, Eppendorf, Katulu, Lufthansa Industry Solutions, Lufthansa Technik, Nordmetall, NXP, startup port, Synergeticon, Tiplu and Verlingo.
